The Canadian Hellenic Congress of Alberta, in collaboration with the Greek Orthodox Community of Edmonton, commemorated the victims of the Greek Pontian Genocide with a memorial that was held in Edmonton, on Sunday, May 13, 2018, at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
Following the memorial all parishioners were invited for refreshments and snacks at the hall.
A few short speeches were given commemorating the memory of the victims of the genocide from the following:
- Father Charalambos Tzintis,
- Elizabeth Hanlis, President of the Canadian Hellenic Congress of Alberta
- Procopi Kouremenos, Secretary of the Canadian Hellenic Congress of Alberta
Mr. Spillios, a long standing member of the Canadian Hellenic Congress of Alberta, was also present during the speeches.
Ms. Hanlis completed the speeches with a reading of the proclamation from Mayor Don Iveson, proclaiming May 19 as “Greek Pontian Genocide Remembrance Day” in Edmonton, Alberta.
The event was well attended by community members.
